Marshlands Inn reviews

Additional details

Marshlands Inn was built in 1854 as a wedding gift by the Honourable William Crane for his daughter who became Ruth Crane Cogswell. Crane was a man of some wealth being a merchant and ship builder and, so it is said, financier of Samuel Cunard's first steamship.

While redecorating the parlours we uncovered some writing on the exposed plaster dating to 1858 and June, 1867. We didn't have the heart to paint over it. So we left it there for you to view as it was written so long ago.

We are told that our front lawns are graced by the oldest gray birch trees in Atlantic Canada. There is a rhododendron in the front flower bed that dates to the turn of the century. Eight acres of land surrounding the inn provide a private refuge for pheasants, ducks (Ovid and Corina are a pair of mallards), muskrats and skunks. Relax in the gardens and enjoy watching the wildlife.

Most of our guests come to enjoy a fine meal on their way to and from their vacation destination. Food served in our dining room in the summer is garnished with edible flowers and herbs which come directly from our gardens in the backyard. We have a respectable wine list and endeavour to keep a variety of wines not usually found in the local liquor store.

Our parlours are hung with old art-works as well as new pieces by Robert Lyon and Choleena DiTullio, well-known local artists. We have an extensive collection of Mount Allison University yearbooks, the Allisonians. Many of our Mount A alumni guests will spend hours in the parlour looking at the books, travelling down memory lane.

Many of the furniture items in the house are original to the families who owned the Inn before us. We carry on their traditions too by offering complimentary hot chocolate and ginger snap cookies in the parlour by the fire at 9:45 pm every night.

The verandah which wraps around part of the building is a great place to sit on a summer's evening sipping a drink and listening to the crickets and the breeze in the tree tops. Our bar has an interesting collection of single malt scotches. And our dinner music will soothe even the most distracted.

If you stay with us you will share the experience with artists, bishops, educators, generals, judges, senators, premiers, prime ministers, industry leaders, scientists, writers, royalty and many more. Why, if George Washington had been alive this century he too would have stayed at the Marshlands Inn!
