The Rock and River Rustic Retreat

Awful!! We paid for 3 nights and left after the first night because we just couldn't stand it! The website, which has been conveniently removed, made it sound like a fantastic place for our family reunion but I would sooner take my chances on the side of the highway than stay there again. We had to leave a $300 damage deposit on top of paying for the entire weekend for our whole group months ahead of time, then everyone had to check in, including guests. Our guests lived right up the road so would stop in for a couple of hours each morning to visit, we had to pay $10/person EACH time they visited, but we weren't told that until the hour long walk about when checking out (it was not posted, nor requested from the guests as they checked in). The creepy owner, also charges $25 per cigarette butt she finds on the ground - so you better hope the last people that camped never left one! We had to sign a waiver saying that she was not responsible for any damage to our vehicle or missing property from it, which is understandable, but then we weren't allowed to park anywhere near our campsite...we had to park on the other side of her house where we couldn't even see it from where we camped. We're unsure if this is where the damage to our rental car occurred. The owner also took it upon herself to offer one of my nieces (7 years old) ice cream and bring her up to her home without telling ANY of the adults, nevermind asking the child to ASK PERMISSION! Luckily Grandma spotted this and caught her just before they went in the house. The outhouses are slapped together out of rough plywood like material, completely unsanitary as they can't possibly be cleaned, and the doors don't even close properly. We considered renting the cabin, but thankful we didn't....it's cute for a child's playhouse, but it is left with the door wide open and is completely unsealed with gaps in the logs big enough for birds to go through. There is no electricity or water going to it, and the nearest outhouse is only about a 3 minute walk, but in the dark, with no cleared walking path, tripping over tall prickly weeds it wouldn't be fun! She also claims that showers are included with camping, but it is $3 to use some sort of outhouse looking shower, we didn't even dare go in there.

Positives: Easy access from the highway, the dogs can be off leash

Negatives: The river is high and fast and much too close for us to be comfortable with toddlers. The mosquito's were unreal! In about 36 hours, while wearing Deep Woods Off, our 3 year old still had 134 + mosquito bites.

The Rock and River Rustic Retreat

We were tired, stopped at local Provincial Campsite and did not like the `camp natzi`` atmosphere, we left to go find something more. We came upon the Rock and River on the Thompson to be so pleasantly surprised to find large open privacy space, dog friendly and GREAT fishing. OMG we stayed longer than planned, relaxed had a `REAL`` campfire and truly enjoyed the place.
We will come back to our home away from home to unwind.
Thank you Tammy !

Wow, We stayed in an awsome rustic cabin overlooking the river, how refreshing to NOT have electric and have romantic candles and lanterns instead. We caught lots of fish, our hostess was awsome, and we rested peacefully, the first time in years !

The Rock and River Rustic Retreat

Cool location on the river. The owner ripped us for dinner, overcharging us by $10PP. The B&B rooms are small, smelly rooms in the owner's doublewide. The owner smokes so if smoking bothers you, think twice about staying here. While trains are part of the western Canada scene, at this location I thought thy were going to crash through the wall they were so close and so loud. The futon in the cabin where we stayed was broken and we had to stack logs under the headboard to keep it from falling on the floor. We had to make the bed up ourselves with old, unmatched, torn bedding. The cabin walls didn't go all teh way to the roof and the logs were unchinked. Just not what I expected for the price.

Positives: The river location is vry nice, and the nearby Mcabee Fossil beds is great. John and Dave, the owners of the fossil beds were super. well worth going.

Negatives: Service, quality, cleanliness, value.

The Rock and River Rustic Retreat

Very scenic area right on the river. Rustic is a good word as the B&B part is pretty basic and the cabin doesn't seem finished since there are spaces between the logs and a large gap between the walls and the plywood roof. The futon bed was broken and had to be propped up at one end (by us!). The cabin was also without electricity or water so you had to walk through the campground portion to get to the common outhouse. In the B&B rooms, we were bombarded by mosquitoes all night and the hostess answered, "well, I told you to turn the light off!" We accepted an offer of a BBQ dinner for $15 per person, but were charged $25 without any apology or negotiation even though we actually did our own BBQing and set/cleared the table. I would recommend getting your price quote in writing and make sure to get a receipt that says "paid in full" since we were overcharged and then 6 weeks later they put a bogus charge on my credit card. A testimonial I wrote on their ad site was completely changed by them and my FULL name was put on it. They then threatened legal action against ME for comments that my sister posted on another website and tried to offer a refund if she would take those comments off but still maintained that the credit card charge was valid.

Positives: Very scenic and right on the river. Nice to be away from a city and near the McAbee Fossil Beds which were GREAT.
Breakfast was ample although simple (remember it is rustic).

Negatives: Hostess smokes so some odor. Loose barking dogs when we arrived. Incessant trains rumbled the house all night long as they were immediately across the river. Furnishings older and a bit worn. Overcharged. Ad said they had wi-fi but then they couldn't seem to provide that. Ad said private bath available but there was only one unless you count the outhouse.
