Hillside Motel

As a business traveler for over 7 years I have never experienced any place more neglected and rundown then the Hillside. The paint is peeling. The vinyl rollout plastic tile was mismatched and consisted of several pieces haphazzardly and only partially covering the floor in the bathroom. The rug was a value grade piece of junk that was not professionally installed and had wavesand runs all through it. The bedspread was nasty and had cigarette burns in it. The furniture was mismatched and not commercial grade and falling apart. The overall appearance is pathetic and shows a clear lack of concern to even make the smallest efforts to make the place presentable. The only reason anyone might stay here is if they were on an extreme budget and the rates were nearly free. I made the mistake of staying for a month to try to take advantage of a rate of $800 thinking I should be able to tough it out by using a sleeping bag on top of the bed like camping. All the rooms are empty except one with some permanent residents holed up there. I had nearly completed a deal and needed a few extra days to seal the deals. The daily rate breaks down to $25.81 using the month rate. I simply asked the owner/mgr to let me stay for a few more days at $30/day due to being an extended stay renter. He simply would not be reasonable and insisted I pay $40/day even though he has no one else renting. I tried to reason with him and explained that I would never ask for that if I were just coming up for a few days but had been there over a month. Either the man doean't care or just doesn't have the capacity for business so I told him it was unacceptable and I would leave and not ever return but did not get personal. He yelled "even better", and could only pause look upon him with disgust and shake my head and walk away. This man is the "professional" running this establishment. It is clear that he has a disconnect with reality and perhaps just doean't care to put forth an effort and do any better. The place is a dump and everyone basically knows that. If your not going to cut bargain basement deals and be flexible then it will remain nearly all vacant all the time. I have ALWAYS reached agreement with motel owners doing the same thing, most of them extending the pro-rated discounted rate per day when staying beyond 1 week or 1 month, etc. If not that we always reached a compromise being reasonable people and using good business sense. In 7 years I've never moved out of a motel due to a disagreement on the rate, until now. This is the character of the man running this place, and running it into the ground. It is in terrible condition and he thinks he can rent rooms at $60+/day. There are options in Walkerton that are clean, new, and professionally managed for that price. Stay there to you peril.

Positives: NONE

Negatives: EVERYTHING, starting with the owner who doesn't care or doesn't know how to run a business and provide customer service. Add cobwebs, spider, water bugs, broken and mismatched furniture, bargain rugs glued to the floor unprofessionally and not tightened, cigarette burn holes and the bed spread, thin rollout plastic floor coverings in multiple pieces not even covering the bathroom floor which is water damaged and feels like it will fall in when you step in there, paint chips falling off the walls, cracked marble in the entrance to the bathroom, non-commercial and mismatched furniture and the list goes on and on.

we arrived at 1:00 a.m. and were very tired or would have left immediately. Took pictures-conditions were horrific. Could not take a shower - so bad. They should be shut down by the board of health. should have listened to first review. Do not go there under any circumstances.

Positives: None

Negatives: mold and mildew, spiders and webs, back of toilet came off wall when sat on, filthy, hole in door in bathroom and also did not shut, bathroom held together by duct tape and caulking,curtains filthy. Daughter-in-law and grand-daughter felt same.

The Hillside was recommended as a place to stay when we went to Walkerton during OMHA playdowns. 8 families booked in and none could stay due to the conditions I cannot say I have found a rating for this motel but when the owner said we should expect a 5* that was an under statement I don't think you can go below zero so I will not try to rate it. Just stay far far away there are other places in Walkerton find one.
