The Hosts we're out of town during our visit, but promised the same treatment.
We had to wait almost 2 hours for the house sitter to let us in despite calling ahead.
First look was that of renovations with ladders all around and obvious signs of years of neglect.
The architecture and woodwork was a wonderful sight to see. Lots of rooms, closets, nooks and crannies in this 100 year old home built by a wealthy business man and politician.
The king suite is very spacious indeed. The room was very hot when we checked in even though is was a cool fall day. Fortunately a couple small windows opened and the room was nice and cool for sleeping.
The room had very few amenities - no basics such as kleenex or a glass to drink from. We ended up using toilet paper as kleenex and interrupted the sitters candle party for 2 glasses.
We knew there was not going to be a shower but the tub did not even have a spigot on it - we ended up helping each other rinse our hair using an emptied bath salts container. My wife ran out of hot water while she was trying to have her rinse off. Somehow there was a small water leak from the old plumbing which caused a leak seeping through the floor and dripping into the living room. When talked about it with the sitter, she mentioned that this has happened before. There what looked like a shower hose but the sitter told us that that didn't work, and never did.
Watch your toes on the way into the ensuite as there was missing tiles in the doorway.
There is no individual climate control for heating or cooling. There was a little fan, which we used for white noise and air circulation.
On BBCanada they advertise tea and biscuits in the evening. We think they must have ended up in the candle party guests.
The bed was very soft and comfy and we both had a pretty good sleep despite there being NO locks on our doors. We put our suitcases in front of both doors for security.
The front door was very hard to open an infact when I needed to go to the truck to get something in the morning, I could not get the door open to get out. I called the sitter for help. She said it sticks sometimes and went around to open it from the outside. She had a very difficult time even at that. I said what if there was an emergency? She says....the side door is always open. Made me think again of the no locks on the bedroom doors.
Breakfast included coffee, scrambled eggs (a little dry) (no choice), bacon and toast (one kind of jam almost empty). There was no juice or milk offered and we had to ask for napkins. No pepper and salt on the table either. Very plain.
All very disappointing. So much so that I asked for a discount off the $189 price tag. (Pamphlet says $169) The sitter said she could not do anything.....she just worked there. So......i called Jonathon (the owner) on his cell and told him of our displeasure and offered him $150 which he agreed to.
We rate the Keyhole Castle B & B as a 2 star.....and that was thanks to the bed. Maybe once the reno,s are complete and with a lot more attention to the needs of traveling guests, it may be worth the $189 a night. And get a SHOWER so clean people can get that way!
