Morehead Lake Cabins & Campsites
Morehead Lake Cabins & Campsites is a campground located in Likely.
Make one of our cabins or campsites your home base as you enjoy exploring this spectacular region of Central British Columbia. We are centrally located, with many good fishing lakes and historic sites close by. You can go fishing, hiking, biking, wildlife viewing or sight seeing. Visit some of the many gold mining sites. Gold mining in the 1860’s opened up this area. In the first half of the Twentieth Century, the Bullion Pit was one of North America’s largest hydraulic gold mines. A small gold rush settlement, originally known as “Quesnel Dam”, turned into the small, friendly community of Likely. It was renamed in honour of John A. Likely, who was connected with the Bullion Pit Mine. Try your own luck at gold panning and you might stumble onto a placer mine operating in the area.
Take a trip to historic Barkerville and enjoy re-living the past. Visit the old mining ghost town of Quesnel Forks. Spend the day fishing on one of the many good fishing lakes or just soak in the natural beauty of the area.
Morehead Lake was created in the 1890’s as one of the water supplies for the Bullion Pit Mine. According to some sources, the name “Morehead” came from the mining term “more head”, others say it came from a miner by the name of William Morehead, who lived near the mouth of Morehead Creek (the creek was named after him). It is a very scenic lake and the rainbows vary from pan size to about 35cm in length.
The hill in the background is Polley Mountain. Bootjack Lake flanks it on one side and Polley Lake on the other side, two of the areas most popular fishing lakes.
